Portugal and Spain: new EIB-supported rail freight services – On 1.2.2022, the EIB signed a EUR 45m agreement with Medway ROSCO, a subsidiary of Meday Operador Ferroviàario de Mercadorias. The project is aimed at supporting the expansion of rail freight services in Portugal and Spain, with the acquisition of 16 electric locomotives (with an additional capacity of around 1.5bn tonne-kilometres) and 113 intermodal wagons. The agreement mainly concerns less developed or transition regions, with the creation of some 940 new jobs during the implementation phase (2022-2023) and 56 new jobs during operation, and is aimed at furthering the EU’s economic, social and territorial cohesion objectives by promoting sustainable transport with zero direct emissions, facilitating cross-border traffic and intermodality, and improving the efficiency of freight transport chains.

EIB Vice-President Ricardo Mourinho Félix said: “The EIB is strongly committed to supporting sustainable transport and promoting cohesion by fostering competition across Europe. The new locomotives and intermodal wagons will improve interconnectivity in Spain and Portugal while reducing traffic, pollution and transport costs. As the EU climate bank, we are applying our knowledge and experience in the railway sector and project financing structures to successfully implement these operations to the great benefit of the citizens of Spain and Portugal.”
