EU Cohesion Policy: EUR 80 million for the modernisation of a railway line between Szajol and Debrecen in Hungary – On 23.02.2022, the Commission approved an investment of more than EUR 80 million from the Cohesion Fund to modernise passenger and freight rail links in the Northern Great Plain region of Hungary and thus provide better connections between the region and the capital Budapest to the benefit of citizens and the local economy and, more generally, the flow of goods between Eastern and Western Europe. Elisa Ferreira, Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, said: “We are launching another important project to concretely improve the lives of citizens in the region. Modernising the railway lines in Hungary will ensure better rail connections for citizens and businesses in the region, but also for freight transport throughout Europe, in line with the Commission’s Green Deal priorities.”

ECSA: Maritime Security – On 23.02.2022, ECSA announced that two sets of Council Conclusions were adopted on 21.02.2022 to extend and strengthen the EU’s coordinated maritime presence in the Gulf of Guinea and the North West Indian Ocean, signalling the continued commitment of the EU and its Member States to maritime security and also recognising the key role of Operation ATALANTA in the Indian Ocean. In particular, ECSA welcomes the extension of the coordinated maritime presence in the Gulf of Guinea until 2024, as this region remains a dangerous piracy hotspot and a challenging area of operation for ships and their crews. Despite the decrease in the overall number of incidents over the past year, recent incidents are a valuable reminder of the continuing threat of piracy. While ship owners continue to play their role in mitigating the risk, government action remains crucial through the deployment of adequate naval resources, capacity building and support for the Yaoundé Architecture.
